<span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">One of the phrases in Janice Marturano’s
book, <i>Finding the Space to Lead,</i>
speaks to the epidemic of multi-tasking or continuous partial attention that
takes place during an American’s day at work or home. She writes that this
habit can be exhausting and inefficient because the mind’s ability is limited
and argues that we can develop the brain’s capabilities through daily
meditation and purposeful pauses, in turn creating better leaders and thinkers.
Early on in the book, she describes a business situation, involving food
contamination in a major product, where employees used mindfulness techniques
to develop consensus and offer a decision that employees would not welcome.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Cambria","serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">Marturano believes the engineering slogan, <i>reduce the noise and capture the signal</i>,
summarizes the concept of mindfulness expressed in these terms: clarity, focus,
creativity and compassion. Her book
serves as a blueprint for those who want to minimize stress, lead with empathy
and regulate their reaction to unexpected events. The author, a lawyer and
former General Mills vice president, guided the merger between Pillsbury and
General Mills, an 18 month process. During
a retreat, she learned mindful leadership and found it gave her mental and
emotional space to deal with the nonstop demands of the workplace.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">Sharon Bolton, a British mystery writer,
has released the fourth book in her series featuring Lacey Flint, a London
policewoman, who has just joined the Marine Policing Unit on the River Thames.
Two months ago, Lacey bought an antique boat in the houseboat community moored
in Deptford Creek, a Thames tributary. Forbidden by law, Lacey had taken up wild-swimming
in the Thames at high tide, when conditions were right. Her swim this day
located a body, wrapped in a linen shroud and tied to a wharf at the river’s
edge.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">The police find more bodies, youngish,
light-skinned, dark haired, pale eyed Asian women wrapped in linen shrouds and
left in the river. As the bodies are found, Lacey finds small plastic sailboats
on her galley floor, tiny crabs and sees a swimmer around her boat. The plot
unfolds to reveal illegal immigrants, a fertility clinic with surrogates and a
female villain.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">Critics consider Sharon Bolton to be a
captivating author, who develops characters in depth and creates plots with
many red herrings. A book review site, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18404322-a-dark-and-twisted-tide?from_search=true"><span style="color: windowtext;">Goodreads</span></a> has comments that talk about the
authentic police procedurals in this work, her strong character Lacey Flint
along with vivid descriptions of the River Thames.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

His first symptom was a buzzing in his head. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When the buzzing became a body tremor, David
Menache, a high school teacher, saw a doctor and learned his cancerous brain
tumor was terminal. What a blow at the age of 34!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
David decided to throw himself into his career, teaching English at
Miami’s Coral Reef Senior High School, a highly-competitive magnet school that
drew students from all parts of the country.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>In his book, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Priority List</i>,
he tells the story of his teaching career and the progression of his cancer and
treatments. Stopping medication, he visits former students after first posting
on his Facebook page, “I’m taking to the road. I plan to hitch, take buses… to
the Pacific Ocean. So let me know where you are and if you’ve got a couch for
the night.” In two days, students in 50 cities offered him a place to stay.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
In one of Menache’s assignments for his students, he gives them terms,
also known as the Priority List, as a way to integrate literature and life’s
lessons.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His students write essays about
themselves and, as he visits these young men and women, they talk about the
Priority List and how it directed them into adulthood. Students reflect through
conversations, posts and letters, how his caring, questioning and teaching
style influenced their lives. Menache includes their writings in his book so
there is the dual story of his illness and his travels to visit former students
on his way to the west coast. <o:p></o:p></div>

A moose wandered into Wilfred’s yard and he knew it was time

fiction “just comes, arriving unbidden” and she is known for earlier novels in
the style known as magical realism.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)<br />
Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris<br />
DVD PN1995.9.C55 L577 2006<br />
<br />
Who doesn’t like a good story about a colorful dysfunctional family? Better yet, who doesn’t like a great story?<br />
<br />
The film Little Miss Sunshine opens with us looking into the eyes of a young girl as she appears to be looking at us. But, the reflection on her glasses tells us that she’s watching something; and, that something turns out to be how pageant contestants respond to winning and losing. The young girl, Olive, is practicing the look of spontaneity of winning. Going in we know this film is about dreams, illusions, hopes, and fears.<br />
<br />
Employing a classic structure of introducing each character in turn, we meet the Hoovers: Olive (Abigail Breslin), the young girl we’ve just seen who has competed in and dreams of pageants; Richard (Greg Kinnear), her father, who has a nine step program to becoming a winner – though he himself is not; Sheryl (Toni Collette), Olive’s mom who is frazzled but is all about family; Olive’s Grandpa (Alan Arkin) – who snorts heroin, sprinkles his conversations with profanity and was “asked” to leave a retirement home - has taught and works with Olive on her pageant dance routine; her teenage brother Dwayne (Paul Dano) who, after reading Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence even as he dreams of getting into flight school; and Olive’s uncle, Frank (Steve Carell), the number one Proust scholar in the world, who has tried to kill himself after a graduate student he fell in love with left him for the number two Proust scholar who - to add to Frank’s depression - has been awarded a MacArthur genius grant.<br />
<br />
After each character is deftly sketched everyone is brought together for dinner. Not just a dinner but - once again - take-out fried chicken dinner! And, with dinner we get the dynamics of all of the family. Uncle Frank is our window into the family as his sister, Sheryl, has brought him home from the hospital because, she’s told, he shouldn’t be left alone. It’s a brilliant set piece masterfully performed and we see each character’s personality and learn that Dwayne hates everybody. But fate or luck has dictated that Olive will be able to participate in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant – she only has to get to California by the weekend. Life conspires that everyone will have to pile into the family yellow and white VW Microbus: it’s the essence of America, the road trip!<br />
<br />
The trip – in quest of the dream at the end of the highway - this time in California - is one of turns missed, roads not taken; of detours and roadblocks: the quintessential journey of discovery. Part of what makes the film work so well is the brilliance each actor brings to his or her role – everyone is spot-on including the character actors who populate the fringes of the film. And, each person begins to learn more about themselves and the family as they get closer and closer to the pageant. The perfect metaphor: after an eventful journey, while they can see the hotel where the pageant is being held, they can only get there with some creative driving! Which makes them – after everything the Hoovers have gone through – seconds past the competition sign-in deadline: after such an arduous trip will Olive be denied the opportunity to compete?<br />
<br />
The Little Miss Sunshine pageant taps into and is part of the American dream. The pageant participants and their families are actual participants who perform their own competition routines. Priceless would be one way of describing how the pageant unfolds. How Olive performs - and how the Hoovers respond - shows how each family member has been transformed and reminds us that quite often it’s the trip and not the destination that is most important.<br />
<br />
The award winning screenplay is from the literate and talented Michael Arndt who employs classical allusions in the structure of the story that resonate subconsciously throughout the film. The VW Microbus could well be a tiny vessel from Greek antiquity bobbing in the Aegean or a long boat on sandy shores being pushed into the sea by a running crew. But Arndt’s screenplay is generous not only to the actors with pitch perfect dialogue but allows the first time feature film directors to tell the story visually. What elevates Little Miss Sunshine to a great film is contained in the opening scene: by looking into Olive’s eyes we are really looking into ourselves.<br />

Maybe you want to learn new growing techniques for veggies, find a fast growing perennial or identify trees, shrubs and plants that attract birds and butterflies. The library adds new garden and landscape books year-round but winter is the time to read, plan and look forward to the next season. Stop in to scan the newest issue of Birds and Bloom and Horticulture in the magazine section or grab a new garden book.</p>
<p>Skim this list of recently acquired titles:
<br>
<i>Backyard Winter Gardening</i> by Warnock SB321.5 .G74 W37 2013
You can grow winter crops with electricity, heating or lighting and this volume provides gardening information that people in the 1700s and 1800s used to keep fresh vegetables on their winter tables. It’s possible to grow lettuce, carrots and strawberries following the author’s techniques.
Audubon Birdhouse Book: Building, Placing, and Maintaining Great Homes for Great Birds QL676.5 .B257 2013

Wonderful photos throughout the text.</p>
<p><i>Daffodil</i> SB413 .D12 K56 2013

Breeders have cultivated hybrids for their shape and color but also continued to propagate older varieties. Read this book to understand the cultural and artistic role of this bright yellow flower that heralds spring.</p>
<p><i>Grow More with Less: Sustainable Garden Methods</i> SB319.95 .S56 2013

What in the world is this thing? Do some research and give us your guess. You could win a prize! <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 19px; line-height: 21px;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">Visit the NHTI Library
to try out our newest technology, Microsoft Surface RT tablets. Similar to an
iPad, the Surface RTs are wireless and have Microsoft Office 2013 - Word,
PowerPoint, Excel and Notepad installed.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">These thin, light-
weight computers in bright orange cases will travel to study areas and the library
living room. The tile-based Windows RT with its colorful 10.6-inch display and
built-in kickstand make it easy to work at a table. The Surface RTs have a
touch screen and you may add a keyboard. The screen is very readable and
students use them for homework and Internet browsing. If you have no need to submit
a printed copy of an assignment, grab a tablet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">When a student wants to
use a tablet, he/she shows a current NHTI photo ID and signs up for a library
account. Because these units cost over $300.00, the library asks for
collateral, such as a current driver’s license, military ID card or passport.
We’ll hold one of these until you bring it back.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">Try one out soon.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

part of your summer, the library offers some recent books to inspire anyone. Call
the Library at 230-4028 and we’ll hold the title for you. <o:p></o:p></div>

work of fiction dealing with the adventures of a rough and dishonest but
appealing hero. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And, Attila Ambrus – the
focus of the tale - is all that and more…only it’s not fiction, despite how
improbable and fantastic it reads:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>it’s the
true story of the emergence of post-communist Hungary into modern Europe
through the tumultuous 1990’s as seen through Ambrus’ story. But, that’s not
the half of it - or perhaps a little more accurately - the 80% of it. The history
of modern Hungary starts with the end of the First World War and the extremely harsh
Treaty of Trianon when a leading cultural and major world power was stripped of
nearly 70% of its native lands (including access to the sea) leaving almost
one-third of its ethnic population to the vagaries and whims, at best, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>of countries not entirely sympathetic to the
plight of Hungary or the Hungarians who, by the few strokes of a pen, found
themselves outside the borders (and protection) of their homeland. “Hungary has
always been unlucky…” is how the first sentence of the first chapter of the <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Ballad
of the Whiskey Robber</i></b> opens - which gives new meaning to the old saw…but
for bad luck Hungary wouldn’t have any luck at all. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in;">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Even knowing that the <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Ballad of the Whiskey Robber</i></b>
is a true story doesn’t make it any easier to <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">believe</i> that it’s true: author Julian Rubinstein could be mistaken
for a fabulist or Thomas Pynchon’s cousin given to the pleasures of absurdism
and imagination with the stunning ability to entertain and to turn a phrase. From
a person who has not yet had the pleasure visiting Budapest and Hungary, how
much more the person who has lived there must appreciate and knowingly catch
the subtleties of the descriptions of the boulevards, districts, train
stations, parks and locales – such as Margit Island – as the almost too
unbelievable tale of Attila Ambrus unfolds, set against the backdrop of Hungary
moving by fits and starts into the 21<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span> century. And, what a passage
it is!<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in;">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">For all of the romp, pace, personalities and
deadpan descriptions (where else would a police force watch reruns of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Columbo</i> as part of their “training”?), Rubenstein
has fashioned a unique look at the history of a culture and country in dramatic
– sometimes simultaneously hilariously and tragically so - transition from
communism to capitalism with attendant problems in between. To tell the story,
Rubenstein uses the up-dated form of the literary ballad which retains an
elaborate and drole narrative told in prose rather than in verse. If the <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Ballad
of the Whiskey Robber</i></b> just told the story of Attila Ambrus, it would
still be a highly entertaining read, perhaps like Jimmy Breslin’s <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight</i></b>, only set in a more exotic locale.
However, Rubenstein’s work is a dynamic and fully integrated horizontal and
vertical history of the progeny of the failure of Trianon told through the life
and exploits of Attila Ambrus that perfectly catches the ethos and pathos of
lost homelands; displaced countrymen; promises of success; and the gulf between
class, wealth and ethnic divisions.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in;">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Rubenstein adroitly gives Attila his full
voice – understanding that Attila, who captured the imagination of his
countrymen – is the glue that holds and propels the narrative and, in so doing,
elevates the <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Ballad of the Whiskey Robber</i></b> to the stuff of legend. </span></span></div>

The third season of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Downton

season of this PBS Masterpiece Classic presentation appears on American
television. Set during the reign of King Edward VII, the series depicts the
intrigue and interconnectedness of English country life within the Abbey as
lived by both the moneyed (gilded) Cawley family and the downstairs house staff
(overseen) by Carson and Mrs. Hughes.<o:p></o:p></div>

<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Meta-fiction posing convincingly as a colorful family
story populated by quirky performance artist parents who incorporate their
children into their art. Coming out of the hotbed of creative writing at the
Sewanee Writers’ Conference and the University of the South with heady stops
along the way including the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo, author Kevin Wilson has
crafted a mind-bending discussion of art, aesthetics, cinema, writing and
reading based, a bit, on asynchronous memories which mutate as each reader
brings his/her own memories and experiences to bear on the story. To read <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Family Fang</i></b> as entertainment is to miss the real genius of the book: it’s
clearly entertaining (if not disturbing) and works as a story about a strange family;
but Wilson is interested in engaging the reader at a much different level. If a
reader doesn’t feel vulnerable with one’s inner emotions and thoughts laid bare
for all to see and doesn’t feel that <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Family Fang</i></b> is alive, potent and
waiting – much like the board game Jumanji pulsed and waited for players – then
enjoy (thank-you-very-much) a masterful story of a quirky family tinged with
strange behavior shrouded in mystery. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></i></b></span></div>

among other things, a direct challenge on how a work is read (the book as
object is changed <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">because</i> it is read),
what is Art and what passes for art, the relevance of certain types of art – is
performance art in bellbottoms an anachronism, retro hip or is it a passing fad
posing as art <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>– how films such as Carol
Reed’s <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Third Man</i></b> and Andrey Tarkovskiy’s <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Mirror</i></b> - inform and shape
the novel, what sacrifices – including the lives of children used as props in performance
art – must be made for Art to endure; where does creative art intersect with
destructive behavior and what happens when the parent-child relationship is
blurred in the name of art? <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">If art challenges us in how we view ourselves in
relation to the world and leads to truths, then performance art hangs on a
slender thread; as Cobb says in Christopher Nolan’s film <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Following</i></b>, “</span></span><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">You take it away... to show them what
they had…” “it” being an object, a feeling, etc. But, is breaking the law in
performance art a crime, an art form or both? Early Film Surrealists believed
that movies were being wasted on entertainment and, in a film such as Luis
Bunuel’s <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Un Chien Andalou</i></b>, wanted to shake moviegoers out of
complacency, to make them react, think and feel through discomfort or shock –
even if only for a fleeting second – what it feels like to be alive.
Performance art by its nature catches people in their everyday lives and forces
them to deal with some discomforting act or behavior and then, in hindsight, begin
to understand that they were participants in the creation of an event. But, is
this art?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Clearly not John Keats’ <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Grecian Urn</i>; does performance art
provide meaning to the artist as well the unaware observer/reluctant
participant and will it rise to the Keats’ level of truth that “</span>Beauty
is truth, truth beauty”?<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Temporal
displacement informs <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Family Fang</i></b> and the novel is a work
of misdirection: it masterfully appears to be about one thing but is really
about another.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Propelled by a story of a
brother and sister, the children of performance artists and parents Caleb and
Camille, Buster and Annie have left home becoming a writer and film actress,
respectively, trying to come to grips with the effects on their psyches caused
by their parents’ use of them as props in their parents’ performance pieces.
The “now” of Buster and Annie is intercut with a recounting of earlier performance
pieces where their parents are revealed to us – and along the way Buster and
Annie - and why the children left home and did what they did. There are many excellent
set pieces, such as Buster and Annie in the school play of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Romeo and Juliet,</i> which brilliantly capture the nature of
performance art – will brother and sister passionately kiss - and the interior lives
of Buster, Annie, Caleb and Camille in making it. Two significant events –
Annie appearing topless in a film and subsequently all over the internet and
elsewhere and Buster being shot in the face by a potato – return them to their
parents home where, in the course of a couple of weeks, Caleb and Camille
disappear while on a road trip. Are they dead? Or, is this one more piece of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Grand Guignol</i> performance art? In trying
to solve the mystery Buster and Annie find art of a different sort, paintings
by their mother hidden – almost - in a closet, the sublimation of her artistic
expression for her and Caleb’s performance art. And, what are the chances that <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Family Fang</i></b> is really the book that Buster is writing about himself,
Annie and their parents as brother and sister try to solve the mystery of the
disappearance of their parents? But wait, there’s more! While geography and
places are vividly rendered (Nebraska does <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">feel</i>
like that but the sacrifices in the name of art an author must make…”Honey,
gotta go to Nebraska in winter for source material…”), <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Family Fang</i></b> is a love
story (or more accurately, stories) observed through the lens of family, art
and meaning. It’s love of siblings for one another and of their parents; and,
of parents for each other and for their children. And, also, love of one’s
self. But, its love in the context of hard choices and decisions made,
self-deception, meaning of life, family, obsession, art, media and, perhaps,
self-respect and the respect for others. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Family Fang</i></b> is about the maturity
of learning to love; working at love and the degrees of success and failure in
lives lived: it is a brilliant work of Art.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Knowing</i>
that <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Sweet Tooth</i> is a Jane Austen
romance, post-modern, Russian doll, </span>Künstlerroman nestled within a spy
story doesn’t make it any less enjoyable or compelling. Ian McEwan has written
a superb personal novel from the point of view of a complex female narrator which
at times is a thriller, a glimpse into the writer's craft, and a psychological
study within the framework of universal themes: love, betrayal, and redemption.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The first paragraph of the book introduces the structure of Sweet Tooth,
“My name is Serena Frome (rhymes with plume) and almost 40 years ago I was sent
on a secret mission for the British security service. I didn't return safely.
Within eighteen months of joining I was sacked, having disgraced myself and
ruined my lover, though he certainly had a hand in his own undoing." The
unfolding of the story is how these events came to pass some forty years ago
places the beginning of the narrative in the United Kingdom of the 1970’s. Serena
is a beautiful and brilliant Cambridge student who is recruited to join the
British M15 and whose mission is to counter Soviet supported writers by
infiltrating and supporting British literary circles of up-and-coming writers in
a psych-ops mission to, hopefully, promote anti-communist writings. Along the
way we are treated to all manner and sorts of musings, contemplations, thoughts
and discussions - all of which are integral to the story. Lingering on the
novel’s side-streets (against the pull of the narrative) is one of the many
pleasures of Sweet Tooth, such as the discussion of Philip Larkin’s “The
Whitsun Weddings” or Joyce’s “The Dead.” One of many intrigues of Sweet Tooth
as a nominal spy novel set in the UK of the 1970’s is that the presence of
United States is more deeply felt than the peripheral Soviet Union which has
the added benefit for American readers of seeing (and learning about) ourselves
in the 1970’s as others saw us even as UK readers revisit their history as
their country continues to pull itself out of the aftermath of the Second World
War. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Sweet Tooth is also a novel about writing, the role of the author and
the relationship of the author to the characters. References made to writers
including: Kingsley Amis, Angus Wilson, Edward Thomas, W. H. Auden, Arthur
Miller, Bertrand Russell, Margaret Drabble, Iris Murdoch, Robert Lowell, T. S.
Eliot and Martin Amis, a friend of McEwan’s. Sweet Tooth is dedicated to
Christopher Hitchens and the discussion of “The Whitsun Weddings” was an actual
conversation between McEwan and Hitchens.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>But, underlying the book is Serena’s knowledge of probability and chance
which, like in the writings of John Fowles (acknowledged by McEwan), such as The
French Lieutenant’s Woman and The Magus, provides the jumping off point of the
novel and very much informs Sweet Tooth in those eighteen recounted months of
the events of the 1970’s.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">Of course, I’ll read it again – if only to luxuriate
in his use of language and to feel the pull of the story. The feeling of re-reading
was no different than after the first reading one of the great novels of the 20th
century, his <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Soldier of the Great War</i></b> (</span></span><span class="branch2"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">PS3558.E4775 S65 1996).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">In <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">First Russian Summer</i></b>, a short story
in the collection entitled, <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Dove of the East: And Other Stories</i></b>
(PS3558.E4775 D68 1990), so acute are an old man’s memories of his grandfather
and the vast forests of central Russia that a reader has the rare privilege of
creating a vivid and intense memory that is somehow shared with the narrator.
How old must author Mark Helprin be to have lived through those years in
czarist Russia before the revolution? An author’s sleight of hand? Helprin has
the rare gift of being able to evoke a time and place as if he lived in that
era, so finely tuned is he to the nuance, rhythm, sights, sounds, smells and
particulars of daily life in those years. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">Helprin is on home turf <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">In Sunlight and in Shadow</i></b>
as the story centers around New York City (as it was known then rather than the
shorthand New York, New York) just after the end of the Second World War, though
in the story we visit many times and places around the world from Tunisia, to
the Ardennes (in an extraordinary chapter), London, California (both San
Francisco and the Central Valley) as well as many other stops, times and places
along the way – all of which, as described, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">feel</i>
as if we are experiencing them contemporaneously. To read Helprin is always a
bit unsettling as his writings lead readers to self-examination as their
thoughts and feelings are tested even as the novel unfolds.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span class="marcdisplayfielddata"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt;">In <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Citizen Kane</i></b>, Mr. Bernstein (Kane’s
factotum) shares a memory of crossing over to New Jersey on a ferry and seeing,
on a departing ferry, a girl in a white dress carrying a white parasol…”</span></span>I
only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month
hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl.” <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">In Sunlight and in Shadow</i></b>
Harry Copeland doesn’t let the woman he sees on the ferry become a memory, so
moved by her that he rearranges his day to ensure that he’ll not only see her
again but will also meet her. One of the many pleasures of <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">In Sunlight</i></b> are the
coincidences of contact and close proximity because unbeknownst to Harry and
Catherine (the woman on the ferry) they had seen each other earlier as
children. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They do meet again and they
fall in love.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
Helprin’s latest novel owes much
to both <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A Soldier of the Great War</i></b> and a <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Winter’s Tale</i></b> (PS3558.E4775
W5 1995) for the sweep and accuracy of history and the stories of great
romantic love. But, the promise implicit in the short chapter in a <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Winter’s
Tale</i></b> entitled, <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Nothing is Random</i></b> is the promise kept
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">In
Sunlight and in Shadow</i></b> and, at the risk of a long quotation from that
short chapter bears repeating:<o:p></o:p></div>

“…time was invented because we
cannot comprehend in one glance the enormous and detailed canvas that we have
been given - so we track it, in linear fashion piece by piece. Time however can
be easily overcome; not by chasing the light, but by standing back far enough
to see it all at once. The universe is still and complete. Everything that ever
was is; everything that ever will be is - and so on, in all possible
combinations. Though in perceiving it we image that it is in motion, and
unfinished, it is quite finished and quite astonishingly beautiful. In the end,
or rather, as things really are, any event, no matter how small, is intimately
and sensibly tied to all others. All rivers run full to the sea; those who are
apart are brought together; the lost ones are redeemed; the dead come back to
life; the perfectly blue days that have begun and ended in golden dimness
continue, immobile and accessible; and, when all is perceived in such a way as
to obviate time, justice becomes apparent not as something that will be, but
something that is."<o:p></o:p></div>

That Helprin believes this is so
is what powers <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">In Sunlight and in Shadow</i></b>. Once we return from the New York
City of 1947 and the lives of the people touched in the book we are changed as
all great novelists change their readers…and we know that “…all rivers run full
to the sea; those who are apart are brought together; the lost ones are
redeemed; the dead come back to life; the perfectly blue days that have begun
and ended in golden dimness continue, immobile and accessible…” <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
